The 20th Conference of the European Association for Sport Management 2012 will take place in Aalborg, Denmark, on September 18-21 bringing together leading teachers, researchers, students and practitioners in the area of sport management.
The overall conference theme is Sport between business and civil society.
The theme was selected to reflect the dynamics and the rivalry between the traditional sports sector based on volunteering and non-profit values, and sport as a profit-making tool affected by growing commercialisation and proffessionalisation of elite sports and professional sports. Commercialisation is increasingly seen also in grassroots sports and in sport for all, for example in the fitness sector, in mass participation events, and in other areas of the sports sector.
Many countries and local authorities face increasing challenges in operating and financing public sports facilities in times of economic crisis, in encouraging volunteering and promoting sports participation to improve public health, and in keeping pace with rapidly changing participation patterns of the population in the local and national sports strategies and policies.
At the same time professional sport suffers increasingly from financial problems and poor governance, and on the international level a veritable arms race is taking place in the battle to win international trophies and attract large international sports events.
In this dynamic and complex environment, sport management plays an increasingly important role. Educational institutions, teachers, researchers and practitioners are challenged every day on their knowledge, skills and capacities. In this respect the 20th EASM conference in Aalborg, Denmark, provides the perfect platform to share new research and experiences, exchange knowledge and to discuss contemporary challenges in sport management.
The EASM 2012 program structure will consist of the following session types:
• The official EASM conference programme with scientific and professional practice abstract/paper presentations in:
• Keynote sessions (invited speakers).
Paper submission
EASM cordially invites you and your colleagues/peers to submit a scientific or practical abstract/paper or poster to be considered for presentation at the conference. Young researchers are invited to submit a scientific paper for the New Researchers Award (NRA). The conference website will be opened for submissions on February 1. Completed research or research in progress is welcomed.
The submission deadline will be April 16, 2012
Topical Sessions
In the topical sessions topics of interest for abstract submission include, but are not limited to the following:
When writing your abstract, it is recommended that you consider the topics listed under the topical sessions (or workshops). However, the Scientific Committee reserves the right to decide on final topic grouping upon abstract selection.
Workshops
Abstracts/papers are invited for the following workshops:
The following workshops are open to participation but do not require abstracts/papers:
J. ESMQ Editors’ workshop. [read more]
K. Play the Game symposium. [read more]
The workshops will be hosted by workshop conveners and designated to allow participants interested in the same sub-theme to work more intensely together during the conference. Workshops are not closed arenas but are designated to encourage continuous discussion and cooperation between participants, who, if successful, can channel their work into special journal issues or edited books.
Abstract requirements
Abstract requirements along with the EASM New Researchers Award (NRA) are detailed below. These are valid also for those workshops that require a paper submission. Please use the online abstract/paper submission form at: www.easm2012.com
Format
1. Scientific Abstracts
Abstracts in this category should include the presentation of either a substantial literature review/discussion (conceptual advance) or primary data analysis (theoretical advance). Presentations will be oral. Abstracts may be submitted for presentation within the conference topical sessions or within a particular workshop (see submission details below) and will be peer reviewed.
While the author may indicate a preference for presentation in a topical session or workshop, the Scientific Committee will make the final decision as to how the abstract is to be presented, if accepted. In the topical sessions oral presentations will normally be limited to a 15-20 minute presentation followed by a 5 minute moderated question and answer period. Please note that other delivery formats may apply for the workshops (see workshops).
2. Professional practice abstracts
Professional practice abstracts can either be submitted by researchers or by sport management professionals. These abstracts are presentations about sport organisational and managerial practice, reflecting and/or reporting on success or failure of sport management. Professional practice abstracts will be reviewed by the local organising committee and by the Chair of the Scientific Committee. In the topical sessions oral presentations will normally be limited to a 15-20 minute presentation followed by a 5 minute moderated question and answer period.
3. Poster Presentations
Posters will be placed on an appropriate poster board and authors are expected to be present at the assigned presentation time slot as detailed in the conference schedule. To present a poster, regular abstract submission guidelines should be followed.
Abstract submission guidelines
Scientific abstracts should be structured to best illustrate the topic selected and always include the following:
*Authors may consider submitting details of an extensive literature critique/review and the abstract headings will differ slightly from above. As there will be no results section there needs to be a section outlining the implications of the review, insights gained, possible research propositions and the like.
** When results are not yet available at the time of abstract submission, authors should mention this and guarantee that they are by the time of the conference.
Professional practice abstracts/papers should be structured to best illustrate the topic selected and include the following:
Abstract should include text only (i.e. images as pictures, figures and tables are not acceptable.)
EASM New Researchers Award (NRA)
“The EASM New Researchers Award” NRA 2012 is organised by ESMQ and sponsored by Routledge Journals.
The NRA is for the best original theoretical or conceptual advance and significant unpublished contribution in sport management. The research should be appropriate for presentation at the Annual EASM conference and for publication in the European Sport Management Quarterly. To be eligible for this award, researchers must be near to completion of their Ph.D. or have graduated less than three years prior to submission. The prize is established to stimulate dissemination of new ideas and innovative research in sport management by encouraging new researchers at the start of their career.
Instructions for New Researchers Award (NRA) submission
For this award a three stage process is used:
Round 1:
Applicants submit a regular 750 word abstract to the EASM 2012 conference organisers by April 10 2012, indicating they want to participate in the NRA. All abstracts will be reviewed, and selected candidates will be invited to participate in the following round. Deselected candidates are admitted to present in a topical session provided their abstract is not rejected by the reviewers.
Round 2:
Successful candidates submit a 5-page paper, single-spaced (including references, and key tables, and/or figures); a minimum of 12-point font, in MS-Word (*.doc) format by May 31 2012 to the editor of ESMQ: esmq@uwindsor.ca. All 5-page papers will be reviewed, and selected candidates will be invited to the next phase. Deselected candidates in round 2 are admitted to present in a topical session
Round 3:
Nominees from round two are invited to present their papers at the 2012 EASM conference.
1) The language for each submission is English.
2) Successful candidates need to provide a statement regarding the stage of their academic career, including where appropriate the date of graduation for their doctoral degree.
3) The research paper may not have been presented or published previously in scholarly outlets.
4) If the paper constitutes part of a broader research project undertaken by the student and/or advisor, a note as to how the submitted paper represents an original, independent contribution must be provided by the student’s advisor/supervisor.
The author/s of the best paper will receive a prize of EURO 500 which has been donated by Routledge Journals. In addition, the winner will receive a complimentary one-year EASM membership, which includes a free annual subscription to the ESMQ. The winner will also be invited to submit a full paper of his/her work to the ESMQ for publication, taking into account the comments and feedback of the reviewers on how the paper may be strengthened for possible publication.
An expert panel will adjudicate on the award which will be weighted as follows:
• 70% will be based on the written paper
• 30% will be based on the oral presentation during the EASM conference
Review Process (excluding NRA)
All Scientific abstracts will go through a double blind review. The abstract will be accepted or rejected based on the following criteria:
The final inclusion of any abstract in the programme depends upon a presenting author’s registration to attend the EASM conference. Please register for the conference on www.easm2012.com
Further Considerations
It is expected that authors of accepted abstracts/papers have the financial resources to pay all personal expenses incurred, including conference registration, production of their presentation and conference travel and accommodation.
Confirmation of abstract/paper acceptance is required together with the conference fee payment to guarantee the inclusion of each author’s abstract in the EASM Conference Book of Abstracts. Should an author not comply with either of these requirements, the organiser reserves the right not to include his/her work in the book of abstracts.
