South of Aalborg

 

The area south of Aalborg has many cosy towns, cool events and beautiful nature to offer its visitors.

 

Nibe – in the name of music

You can find Nibe 22 kilometres west of Aalborg. Nibe is an old idyllic market town with an intimate marina. This town is especially known for hosting a four-day music festival featuring big musical artists each summer. It also has other events such as an old-fashioned market, a herring festival and a culture night. Read about the many possibilities in Nibe.


Løgstør – the mussel town

Another charming market town lies 27 kilometres straight west of Nibe namely Løgstør. This town has a yachting marina and a harbour for the fishing industry, lovely streets and lanes, art, museums and loads of mussels, which is why it’s called “the mussel town”. The beautiful Fjord

Along the beautiful Mariager Fjord are the towns of Hobro, Mariager and Hadsund. At the innermost part of the fjord is Hobro where you will find the viking fortifications of Fyrkat, dating back to the year 980, as well as charming streets and interesting shops.

 

The centre of Mariager oozes with old Danish idyl with half-timbered crooked houses and cobbled streets. This is where you can find Denmark’s only salt centre where you can try what it’s like to go for a swim in the Dead Sea. Read more about Mariager Fjord.

 

The world’s largest independence celebration outside the US

South of Aalborg lies Rebild National Park where the world’s largest Danish-American celebration party in honour of the United States’ independence takes place on 4 July; People sit in the heather-clad hills and listen to entertainment, speeches and sing songs together. In the meantime, Aalborg celebrates its so-called “American Days”.

In the same area, you can visit Rold Skov, one of the largest forests in Denmark covering an area of 80 square kilometres.

 

The Vildmosen sphagnum bog

With its 7,600 hectares, the Vildmosen sphagnum bog is Denmark’s largest nature preserve, and you can find it southeast of Aalborg. You can visit the "Lille Vildmose” visitors' centre and see the variety of plants and animals that belong in the sphagnum bog. This is the largest raised bog of Northern Europe, there are lakes, birds, golden eagles, wild boar, common cranes, red deer, otters and many more. Read more about the Vildmosen.
