Hjørring, the capital of Vendsyssel

Hjørring is the capital of Vendsyssel, the largest municipality in the region with more than 35,000 citizens. The city is more than 750 years old and has always been an important piece in the trade industry, due to the central location.

Today, Hjørring is a modern city with culture, education, and atmosphere added to the trademark – and still developing. You will find UCN in the mid-town of Hjørring, close to the city centre, shops, stadium and cafés and restaurants.

The cultural Hjørring

Although Hjørring has developed into a modern city, you can still feel the atmosphere of the well-preserved history of the city. Old original buildings and streets with cobble stones are still to be found alongside new shops and modern malls.

Art is highly valued in Hjørring, and if you take a stroll through town, you come across more than 160 remarkable sculptures by Danish and Nordic artists. A modern art gallery hosts various exhibitions of both national and international artists. If you are interested in history, a visit to Vendsyssel Historical Museum or one of the splendid churches will be an interesting experience.

Hjørring’s central location makes it a local base for interesting excursions to e.g. the Eagle Sanctuary in Tversted, Fårup Sommerland at Blokhus, the North Sea Oceanarium in Hirtshals, one of Denmark's best beaches in Løkken or the permanent art exhibition at The Art Building in Vraa.

Shopping

Hjørring is the largest commercial town in Vendsyssel with a wide range of products on offer in 175 designer and speciality shops, 14 supermarkets, the METROPOL shopping mall and Bauhaus. Hjørring has converted a part of the town to a pedestrian area, which adds atmosphere to the centre.

Depending on the season, you will find various events and entertainment in the pedestrian area of the city. During spring and summer you can see and listen to musicians and artist contributing to the atmosphere, and during Christmas time, the city centre is decorated beautifully with lights and Christmas trees.

Sports and activities

Hjørring is a very ’active’ city with plenty of possibilities for exercising and engaging in various activities.

Across the road of UCN in Hjørring, you will find the stadium. Here, the biggest football matches are played, and during winter time, an ice-skating arena is available for the public.

Football is a very popular sport in Hjørring, and during the summer (week 30), Hjørring is hosting one of the world’s largest international youth football tournaments, where more than 30,000 players, coaches, and referees participate.

Besides football, you can find clubs for most other popular sports, such as handball, tennis, badminton, and swimming – you also have the possibility of enjoying the new ‘aqua-house’ with pools, wellness, and cafés.

If you are into golf, you can find this in Hjørring as well. Hjørring golf-club welcomes both new members and visitors, who wish to try out a game of golf.

However, Hjørring offers more than sports.

For a day or evening of fun, you can visit Hjørring bowling- and go-cartcenter. You can go to the cinema or visit the modern library, which offers events and cafés besides a wide range of Danish and international books.
