Admission requirements - University College of Northern Denmark

Admission requirements

UCN requires that the prospective students are over 18 years old. All applicants should normally as a minimum have an upper secondary school leaving exam preferably in a subject relevant for the programme they are applying for. For some countries outside EU applicants also need 1-2 years of college or university studies.

In general students need to have good marks and on some programmes there are specific requirements for their marks in e.g. mathematics. Please read more about specific requirements under each programme. Applicants must have the exams deemed relevant by the  Danish Agency for International Education under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Find information about the admission requirements from your country here.

English Level

Please note that all programmes require a command of English sufficient for academic purposes, namely:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.0, or
  • Cambridge Advance level C, or
  • Cambridge Proficiency level C, or
  • Oxford Placement  Test 1 - at least 140 correct answers (minimum 70 in the grammar part), or
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 213 if computer-based, 80 if internet-based or 550 if paper-based, or
  • A minimum score of B2 in any English test that can be calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, such as TECL or similar.

Certification must be attached, or your application will not be taken into consideration.

If you wish UCN to consider an alternative English level, you may apply to the International Office for approval. However, for applicants from outside Europe we only accept the IELTS or TOEFL English test.

Applications must be made on the standard KOT form. Applications for admission with the copies of all relevant qualifications attached should be submitted as early as possible. You must follow the instructions given in this checklist regarding the documents that need to be attached to the application and where you need to send it.

International Student Fee

International students starting their studies at UCN will be charged a 100 Euro International Student Service Fee.

Compared to students studying at a Danish taught programme, our international students are freshmen in need of being integrated in the Danish society in general and in the Danish learning traditions/approach in particular.

We are very pleased to welcome so many international students and therefore the 100 Euro fee is just a symbolic amount covering some of the extra services that international students and their families in particularly appreciate.

Some of these special services are:

  • Pick up at the airport/railway station/bus station
  • Housing support
  • Introduction days – e.g. about getting settled in Denmark, being registered, knowing the culture, etc.
  • Introduction party
  • Assistance in finding spare time jobs
  • Extra hobby activities organized by our international student ambassadors
  • Student card
  • Special events
  • Student-to-student services

The International Student Fee is non-refundable and also works as the guarantee of a place on the study programme. You will be able to read more about the International Student Fee in the admission letter, e.g. how to pay, etc.

Non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens paying full tuition-fee shall not pay International Student Fee as the International Student Fee is included in the full tuition-fee.
