Dedicated to emergency services management

- Dorthe Krogh Sørensen

Dorthe Krogh Sørensen graduated as an architectural technologist from UCN - University College of Northern Denmark. Today she works for the municipality of Rebild as a building control officer and emergency services manager.

“My job is very interesting. I work partially as a building control officer where many cases concern businesses and I also prepare planning permission applications. The other part of my job is that I am emergency services manager. In this function, I work on specifically on fire approval. Furthermore, I work as an emergency services manager where I am on duty for a week every four weeks. Thus my job provides me with challenges meaning that I don’t always know what will happen during the day which makes it very exciting.”

Good and important back ground knowledge

Dorthe has always known that she wanted to work with buildings, but she wasn’t quite sure how and in what line of business. She decided to take a higher preparatory exam and then went into a painter and decorator apprenticeship;

“I thought it was important to achieve an understanding of how a construction site works, so to get some background knowledge I decided take an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. With my higher preparatory exam and my painter decorator experience and the architectural technology programme I have good ballast for my present job."

After her apprenticeship Dorthe decided to enrol to the Architectural Technology and Construction Management programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark and she is very happy with that decision today because it gave her some good experience:

“You get very solid and comprehensive professional knowledge which means that you will have many possibilities when you’ve graduated. I still use some of the theoretical knowledge e.g. from the subject of Financial Planning & Management in which we were taught economics and budget planning."

A clear goal

Dorthe is very happy with her job and she finds it immensely exciting. In the long term however, she would like to work 100% in emergency services management since that is her great interest.

“I have been able to take some further education which has been relevant and interesting in relation to emergency services management and it has truly sparked an interest in me. It has expanded my competencies and it lends even more versatility to my job and I really like that.

Dorthe is excited about what the future might bring, but she is certain that it will be something related to emergency services management - because she's dedicated to it.
