Fresh from the exams straight to a job

- Morten Hammer Jensen

System developer job

When he graduated from the Computer Science programme he had already given up the thought of looking for jobs - two weeks before the final exam he was already hired as a system developer at Logimatic.

Thus Morten Hammer Jensen realised that pursuing his interest in IT which led him to attend the Danish technical gymnasium after finishing his lower secondary education and later choose Computer Science had been the right thing for him to do.

Quickly got his own areas of responsibility

Logimatic delivers IT solutions and consultancy services to wharfs, shipping companies, the industrial sector, the commercial sector and the public sector and Morten plunged into work. Everyone showed complete faith in the skills of the new 23-year-old employee so he was attached to projects that were already under way.

”I was attached to a project for Arla in Sweden and soon I got my own assignments under the project. It was exciting suddenly to be working on something that others would use once it was done. Since then, I have visited Arla’s factory in Vimmerby and seen that what I worked on for months was now nearly indispensable to the employees in the warehouse,” says Morten who met Logimatic during his studies:

”I wrote my final exam project with my group on Computer Science for Logimatic and gained an understanding of what the company did and what kind of workplace it was. About a month before my final exam I saw that they were looking for a system developer. I applied for the job, went to an interview and got the job.

Had the necessary knowledge

When he started at Logimatic, he soon found out that the Computer Science programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark had provided him with the knowledge necessary for managing his new job. Even though many things were new and unknown to him, he had a good basic knowledge of subjects such as networks, programming, databases, SQL and documentation and specifications which made it easy for him to get started.

”I use my knowledge of these areas nearly every day in my work as a system developer. And the theories and concepts I learned on the programme have truly helped me understand other technologies than the ones I already knew.

I got a basic understanding of how to think when you program and that knowledge is critical in my line of work. Add to that the very project-oriented work form that is used on Computer Science. That work form taught me how to collaborate on a common assignment which is a competency I wouldn’t want to be without today”, says Morten Hammer Jensen.
