My hobby became my living

- Rune Batsberg Sørensen

Plenty to do

Ever since he was a child Rune Batsberg Sørensen has been interested in IT and computers. He studied the Computer Science programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark and today he has made his hobby his living. He works as a decentralised IT supporter at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark. This is a job that provides much freedom and responsibility and that he likes very much because of just that.

”The tasks vary very much. For instance, I provide support for student laptops, employee laptops and the desktop PCs and Macs at the school. I am also responsible for maintaining our Mac server, networks, phone system, printing system and administrative systems.

This means that I have plenty to do and loads of interesting tasks waiting for me every day. I plan my own work day, and with the freedom and the tasks that I have comes a lot of responsibility as well of course. For instance if there is a problem with say the network it affects many people since nearly all tuition takes place over the network.”

Much freedom, lots of responsibility and exciting challenges

When Rune started on the programme, he wasn’t sure where it would lead him. All he knew was that he wanted to pursue his interest in computers, programming and IT. Later though, he found out that programming was not his main interest but that IT support was what made him tick.

”I was lucky to go on a Microsoft course that gave me all the abilities I needed combined with my knowledge from my Computer Science education."

If you ask him, this is close to being the job of his dreams. At least for now.

”I have a high degree of freedom and with that comes exciting challenges and tasks and combined with contact to many different people every day this means that I can still get up on a rainy Monday morning and look forward to going to work.”

A natural choice

Choosing the Computer Science programme is a choice that Rune doesn’t regret. Choosing UCN - University College of Northern Denmark was a decision that came naturally to him:

”It was the place that appealed to me the most. I couldn’t imagine studying at the university so choosing UCN - University College of Northern Denmark came naturally. I chose the Computer Science programme because it would provide me with knowledge and an insight into how software, computers and networks work. And that is just the knowledge I got and which has led me where I am now.”

What lies ahead is not easy to predict but one thing is for certain, there are many more years with exciting tasks and challenges waiting ahead.
