Intern at one of Europe´s leading manufactures

- Anna Marie Falk Kroesch, student of Design, Technology & Business (Graphics)

Gabriel A/S is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of upholstery fabric in pure new wool. The company, which was going to be my “place of work” as a Design, Technology & Business (Graphics) student for three weeks, had been carefully selected. Aesthetics and communication are two things that mean a lot to me. In this kind of company, I must relate to a specific product and a geographically large market.

More knowledge about design

For many years, I have worked in sales and PR within the media business, but I also wanted to learn more about design and graphics. I wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes.

That is the reason why I chose the Design, Technology & Business (Graphics) programme – to acquire knowledge about processes, photography, colour theory, layout, drawing and graphic programs.

I also want to combine my education as a Neo Feng Shui advisor (interior decorating) with the qualifications I will achieve with a graphics education.

Much applauded presentation

I was working at Gabriels Sample Master and Marketing department. My internship assignments were very varied. My first job was to define three fabric collections from a certain colour system.

That was just the right kind of job for me. My last large assignment was formulated like this: “Make a presentation for all our sellers to inspire them and to help them inspire their clients." The product I was going to sell was many metres of fabric of a predefined quality and in a very wide selection of colours. I got free rein.

I used my knowledge from my studies and went through the creative design processes: Research, layout and presentation. One of the presentations was to be made in English. It went well and both of my presentations ended with applause and positive feedback. It made me feel so good afterwards.

My learning process

I found out that my strengths are my independence and initiative. I also found out that generating ideas and designing doesn’t only happen in front of a computer screen.

Working with rough sketches, moodboards, mindmaps, notes etc. are important elements in the design process.

When I plunged into the assignments on my internship, I felt that I had some really good background knowledge from my studies. Gabriel has given me positive response. Not just to me but to the study programme as well. It has made me believe that good Design, Technology & Business (Graphics) graduates are in demand.
