Exams led to job
Our Art Director, who
was the external examiner at my exam, took the opportunity to see what was going on among graduates, and apparently he liked what I presented at my exam.

Pursuing your dreams

- Peter Johnsen, Marketing Co-ordinator at the music and theatre venue “Værket”

Peter Johnsen always wanted to work in sports or culture combined with graphic design and production. He took the first steps toward his dream when he decided to apply to the Design, Technology & Business (Graphics) programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark, and in getting his student job at the music and theatre venue “Værket” in the city of Randers, he took the next one. A lot has happened since then.

He is now working as a Marketing Co-ordinator in the job of his dreams at “Værket” in Randers.

Diverse marketing assignments

In his job as a Marketing Co-ordinator, Peter is in charge of a lot of tasks. He is responsible for planning, production and co-ordination of the marketing activities, makes graphic material such as magazines, musical and theatrical programmes, posters, flyers, ads and similar printed material. Furthermore, he is in charge of maintaining the homepage and co-operation with other music and theatre venues.

Thus, his primary responsibilities are marketing cultural events that take place at the music and theatre venue and last but not least he also works on the marketing of “Værket” in its own right.

Student job with career perspectives

That Peter is working where he is, is not purely a coincidence. “I have always wanted to work in sports or culture combined with graphic design and production. They are my primary interests, so I have pursued them and they have led me where I am today.”

However, more than his interest in culture has led him to “Værket”. His will and ability to create a network and utilising them in the right situations has benefited him as well. As a student he was already working in a student job at “Værket”.

“I worked as a doorman, in the cloakroom and inspected tickets etc. I also stepped in if someone was needed in the lighting, props or stage departments when it came to setting the scenes and the like. So in that way, my student job didn’t have much relation to graphic design and my present job, but it meant a lot that I had a foot in the door. I knew them and they knew me, and that was what mattered so much on the day I had to convince them that I should get a chance on the job position that I possess today. I was known in the house and I had a good reputation.”

As with many other things in life, getting a job is about timing. Peter had perfect timing. He got the job. So, in many ways, Peter now has the job of his dreams. He decided to pursue his interests and head for the business that he wanted to become part of in the long term.
