- Learning strategies at UCN Technology and UCN Business

Learning theory in a classroom is one thing – putting theory to use in practice at a work place is another. That is why it is UCN Technology and UCN Business' vision that all graduates, regardless of their study programmes, should be able to “put knowledge to good use” – e.g. you should learn to “put knowledge to good use through concrete experience where you gain useful competence and create value.

 

This also means that all students go away on internships in Denmark or abroad during the course of their study programme.

 

Pro-active learning – four main areas of development

There are four focus areas for UCN Technology and UCN Business:

• Learning approach – holistic and user-oriented with ”The whole person” profile at the centre 
• Business community contact – putting knowledge to use. Contact with the business community integrated in all possible ways
• Commitment – enthusiasm and attentiveness flowing through UCN Technology and UCN Business in every way
• Physical environment – buildings and facilities that inspire and support the learning approach

Holistic approach

The focus areas for the UCN Technology and UCN Business learning strategy are combined in an organisational structure containing a holistic learning approach where you will learn to combine your achieved knowledge, skills and competences to obtain optimum results. This holistic learning approach is called “The Whole Person” which is the profile UCN Technology and UCN Business wants all graduates to achieve. That is why UCN Technology and UCN Business has adopted a single approach to learning and education.

 

”The whole person” constitutes a teaching and learning strategy and as such works as a framework for both lecturers and students within which they can co-operate as partners commonly searching for new knowledge and understanding.

All study programmes at UCN Technology and UCN Business share the same learning and educational strategy to create the sought-after graduate profile. The learning approach takes its starting point in the things we do:

Interdisciplinarity

Courses and modules are interdisciplinary to teach you to use skills and competences in complex contexts and problems and not just on isolated problems. This makes problem-based learning and interdisciplinary projects important elements in the concept of “The whole person”. This is why students must follow all activities during a semester and will not be granted exemption from individual courses.

Pro-active learning

Pro-active learning lies at the heart of UCN Technology and UCN Business and creates a learning environment focused on interactive dialogue, project work and the ability to communicate a message. To really make new knowledge stick, it is important that you work at learning in different ways and at different levels, on your own as well as in collaboration with others. It is hectic, committing, complex, encouraging and fun. UCN Technology and UCN Business offers you challenges and support, but the process and responsibility remain yours.

 

International hands-on experience

Three in four UCN students go abroad for a one-semester study placement or internship. This way, through pro-active learning and curiosity, they have ample opportunity to learn about other people and countries through their languages, companies, technologies and clients – an experience and achievement of knowledge that cannot be obtained in the classroom. The internship gives you practical experience within your area of study, helps you develop useful and practical skills in relation to your field of work and gives you the opportunity to show your worth in real working situations.
