From the very first day of his studies on the Financial Management programme, his goal was set. He wanted a career as an estate agent. And that was his goal during the entire education. And he succeeded in achieving it.
Andi Madsen, aged 26, is now an estate agent working in the apartment section of EDC Danebo estate agency in Aalborg. He has very free rein and full responsibility for the deals that he makes. He knows how to handle a real estate deal from start to finish. And that is exactly what he does. Several times a month in fact.
- “Most students in my class wanted to work in the banking sector. But my goal through the entire education was to become an estate agent. I wanted a job where I wouldn’t just sit in the office all day. Instead, I wanted a job where I would get out and meet many different people in just as many different situations”, says Andi.
Andi’s background for taking the AP Degree in Financial Management is very varied. Much more varied than the backgrounds of many other students. He has a one-year Higher Commercial Examination Degree and one year of studies on the Architectural Technology & Construction Management programme at UCN as well as a four-year Upper Secondary School Examination Degree.
- “I made a mistake in choosing the Architectural Technology & Construction Management programme. I found out quite soon that it was not for me at all. But I decided to finish my first year, and today I realise that I’ve learnt a lot from that study programme which comes in handy in my current job. - My one-year Higher Commercial Examination Degree was a supplement to my Upper Secondary School Leaving Examination Degree.
The reason why my Upper Secondary Education took four years is that I attended a sport institution with financial support from Team Danmark, an organisation that supports Danish elite athletes, where I played badminton while studying", explains Andi. However, he gave up badminton about the same time as he got his Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate.
But Andi hasn’t given up education. At the moment he is extending his education by obtaining a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration focusing on Financial Planning. His goal is to become a state authorised real estate agent. - Many estate agents aren’t authorised by the state, but I wan't an authorisation. In my opinion, when you buy and sell real property you should also have the best possible education to do so”, says Andi.
He considers himself the advisor of both buyer and seller. When you handle real estate sales every day, it is easier for you to get an overview of a deal than it is for the seller who needs to sell his apartment.
- At the moment, the prices are under much negotiation. Usually, the seller tends to reject an offer from an interested buyer if it’s lower than what he wants. But this is where the estate agents must be able to advise the seller in the best possible way”, says Andi who has gained much experience in the real estate market since he was hired at EDC.
- "I got close to free rein from the very beginning but naturally I was backed up by all the help and support I needed. Over the last years I’ve had about four deals a month where I am responsible for much of the work from the preliminary meetings and closing the deal. That gives me good experience and a certain routine in my work”, he says.
