Has overall IT responsibility Has realised the dream of becoming an IT supporter and administrator. Read Andreas’ story |
To Janus Storkborg, the most important thing about a job is being able to develop personal as well as professional competencies – and the job he has at the moment offers plenty of opportunity to do just that. Janus has found the job of his dreams;
He graduated from UCN - University College of Northern Denmark with an AP Degree in IT Networks & Electronics Technology from the electronics specialisation and a final exam project in USB communication, control and regulation and today he is working as a hardware and software developer in the development department at the Danish IT company Asetek which makes liquid coolers for PCs.
Janus has always been interested in computer hardware, and when he found out that he could take an education in soldering circuit boards and the like, he was hooked immediately. That his choice of study programme led him to the job of his dreams at Asetek is coincidental in many ways.
After Janus had finished his studies, all he could think of was summer holidays. He did, however, send a speculative job application to Asetek for a job as a development and product maturing engineer.
“I sent it thinking that I would probably be rejected since I am not a “real” engineer. However, two hours later I got a call saying that they’d like to see me Monday morning to find out how I would fit in, and Tuesday I was hired!"
It was the idea of independent studies and many long lectures at university that meant that Janus didn’t choose that way to the job of his dreams. On the contrary, he found it interesting and tempting to choose UCN. This was due to the programme’s short duration of only 2 years and the thought of getting his hands on practical tasks almost instantly.
There are many tasks for a hardware and software developer. At the moment, Janus is working on a USB device for use inside the PC to manage the internal temperature by controlling the speed of fans to achieve the best possible cooling ability.
“Most of my time at work is dedicated to software in an application for this device since this is where I have the least experience and thus I have to spend more time on learning on my own.”
This way there is always an opportunity to gain new knowledge.
“The job is very varied. There are new tasks every day from soldering LED lights to showcases to structuring simple databases for the production quality control.” This is the kind of variety Janus appreciates since this gives him ample opportunity to (further) develop personal as well as professional skills.”
