From taxi ride to keyboard
When Benny Bentsen was 28 years old he thought it might be about time to get an education. At that time, he was working as a taxi driver so it was a major change when he decided to study Multimedia Design & Communication at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark;
“I have always been very interested in the internet and the possibilities it offers. I just never got round to taking an education. But I decided to take the plunge, and I am very glad that I did. When I was trying to select a study programme, I was also considering the computer science programme but I thought it focused too much on programming. So I opted for Multimedia Design & Communication because it also includes the design aspect. It is a very wide-ranging programme, which includes many very good things.”
Varied working day
Today, Benny works as a system developer at Region Nordjylland and he thrives in his job where he meets different challenges and considers every day an opportunity to develop;
“My working days are very varied, and I have many different tasks and assignments. Among other things, I create special applications for the hospital’s web site, web apps, specifications requirements, customer support and then I make estimations of different projects. I have a lot of responsibility because I have these projects from start to finish, and I like that responsibility because it gives me a high degree of freedom. It's great to feel that satisfaction when a project is complete but it's also a continuing development of my competencies where I learn from my mistakes.”
Bonus for life
Benny believes that he has acquired some good things during his time at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark. He thinks that he has got some tools that he can use in his daily work, plus there was an extra bonus about the school that he couldn’t have studied for;
“One of the best things about my education is that we solved almost all assignments in groups and I have truly learnt a lot from that. At work I hardly do any projects on my own and I can feel that I have good experience in handling conflicts when more of us work together to solve a task. But if you ask my wife, she'd probably say that she's the best thing I got from my education, because we met each other at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark.”
Benny is certain that the Multimedia Design & Communication programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark was the right choice for him. And to this day, he is happy that he took the plunge and exchanged the cab ride for a keyboard.
