Multimedia designer – N’volve

- Rasmus Sørensen

From final exam project straight to a steady job

When he had finished his final exam project, Rasmus Sørensen had passed his Multimedia Design & Communication studies. And got a job.

The external examiner was the CEO of N’volve, which develops marketing solutions for mobile phones, and he was so impressed with the examination project which Rasmus and his group had prepared that he called Rasmus after the examination and asked him whether he would be interested in a job interview.

The interview went well and 22-year-old Rasmus was offered a job, which he accepted. Now, Rasmus is working on the graphic user interface on a new product from N’volve – the so-called mobsites.

Pure luck

- “You could say that it was my luck that we had an external examiner at our final exam. It was exciting to have someone from the business community evaluating our final project, plus it also led to very quick employment for me,” says Rasmus

The final exam project that Rasmus worked on was an electronic guide, which could find the right choice of education for different people. - "Our starting point was the theory that each individual has different kinds of intelligence that are used in different situations. Each person has intelligences that are different from those of other people. Some are good with numbers and abstract thinking. Others may be good at music or languages. But everyone can have something within all areas.”

- “Our idea was that by answering questions and solving small problems, it would be possible to find one's strong and less strong intelligences and thus create a personal profile. Then we could compare this profile to the demands of different study programs,” says Rasmus and continues:

“We managed to create the system and we tested it on some students from different study programmes at the university. The results were that the study programmes they were already on were the ones that were best suited for their intelligences. So something indicated that we'd got it right.”

Rasmus’ background

Rasmus' background for applying to the Multimedia Design & Communication programme is a higher technical exam with a specialisation in service and communication. He liked his studies at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark:

“Partially because it introduces students to many interesting subjects and partially because the specialisation period provides you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in an interesting subject or go on an internship in a company.”

His job at N’volve concerns mobile phones. Not for regular calling but for using the phone as an information centre, which is also referred to as mobsites.

“Mobsites is a small program that is installed on the phone. After that it's free for use because it works offline, but it can be updated through Bluetooth technology. It can be used for all kinds of information. For instance, there are airline companies that have flights to London that now offer their customers a guide to London as a mobsite. The customers install the program on their phone, and after that they can use their phone to find their way around London, read about sights and much more. The guide also contains phone numbers so that you can make a reservation at a restaurant you've read about,” Rasmus explains, and he continues:

"Other examples are ski destinations in Norway, museums, holiday centres, in short any place where guests or customers need information can make use of a mobsite. - My job is to prepare the graphic part of the user interface. It is my responsibility that users can navigate around the screen on their mobile phones and find the information they need,” says Rasmus.
