Study environment

-  On the Service, Hospitality & Tourism Management programme

Social life is an important part of the Service, Hospitality & Tourism Management programme at UCN - University College of Northern Denmark. That is why we plan introductory events, intro trips, parties, lectures, study visits, company visits, a one week study trip to e.g. the Netherlands or Dubai, Christmas lunches etc.

The study trip

In the second semester of your studies we arrange a study trip for you and your class. The aim of the study trip is to provide our students with an international perspective in the service industry. The study trip is also designed to expand the student’s professional knowledge. The duration and the destinations for the trips vary from year to year. For the enrolment 2011-2013 we offer a trip to Dubai that is going to last ca 8-10 days.

Besides travelling and socialising with your classmates, the trip offers visits to 9-12 service enterprises, operating within the fields of leisure, sport, tourism, hotel and restaurant manage-ment. The following themes are normally covered during the meeting: short introduction to the enterprise, its position and challenges in the market, the ways of marketing the services.

Study groups

Study groups of 4-5 persons will be formed at the beginning of your studies. In addition to the gaps in between the lectures, the timetable will reflect time specifically allocated to self-study in groups on Thursdays. We highly recommend that you prioritise your work in groups and make sure you positively and constructively contribute to collaboration with the group mem-bers.

Class coordinators

We recognise that a good dialogue with students and their input at every level can be invalu-able in shaping all aspects our work. That is why approximately every third week we hold an information and feedback meeting with your class, where the students and their respective class coordinators share their experiences - the good, the bad and the ugly. The students are encouraged to provide their input to the meeting agenda. Together we do each other better!

Semester performance review – use your full potential!

In each semester each student will be invited to an interview and a so called semester perfor-mance review. The interview is performed, as a rule, by the class coordinators; however other lecturers can do that, too. The topic is “How can I use my full potential during my stu-dies?”. Through sparring and coaching, the lecturer in charge will guide the student towards the optimisation of his/her performance and attainment.

Board of studies

At the Service, Hospitality and Tourism Management studies we have our own Board of studies and each class elects one representative and one substitute representative for the board. Its job is to support the students and to ensure enjoyable, safe and interesting environ-ment – professional and social - at UCN. It is designed to help with or even just listen to the concerns of students.

The Board of studies acts as a ‘link’ between the class coordinators and the Programme direc-tor. The representatives are invited to the meetings, where further development and optimisa-tion of the programme are being discussed. The students, who are a part of the Board of stu-dies, receive a certificate, which complements their diplomas.

An international environment

Since the Service, Hospitality & Tourism Management programme is taught in both Danish and English, the study environment on the programme has an international feel. During the course of the study programme there will be various joint events across nationalities just as the study trip to places such as the Netherlands and the intro trip will be joint.

This way, students will have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of other cultures and continuously improve their English skills.

Tutors

During your first academic year, you will be allocated selected tutors who have received tutor training to ensure you a good course of study. You can turn to the tutors with any questions you may have. Learn more about the tutors.

Course evaluation

As we constantly try to develop our programme, we want to make sure you play a central role in your studies. On the completion of each course, you will receive an evaluation questionnaire via UCN’s e-mail. Please complete this questionnaire to help us in our ongoing assessment of the programme– that would put us in the picture about what we do well and what we can do even better.

The class coordinators will then announce general ideas and opinions from the evaluator; where-as assessment of the specific courses will be performed in cooperation with the lecturer con-cerned. All answers that you give in the questionnaires are entirely confidential and they will not at any time influence your marks in the courses in question.

Wall of Fame for people with commitment and passion

UCN Technology and UCN Business recognises students and staff who have made a special effort within their field, institution or for their fellow students. These could be people who have used their achieved knowledge and reflection have used their abilities to generate new ideas.

Or they could be people who with their personal insight and development have succeeded in cre-ating long lasting relations and collaboration across the organisation and even reahing into the business community.

As part of their acknowledgement, we prepare a text with a photo of these commited, passionate people to be hung on our Wall of Fame noticeboards at each campus. Wall of Fame furthermore reflects ”the whole person”.
