Innovative Occupational Therapy

 

Sustainability and environmental factors result in new challenges in health- and social care and due to the globalization and rapidly development in technology and knowledge transfer on the internet, the last ten years has been inflicted by a continuously more popular and necessary objective on a societal level and as an effect of this an increasing managerial attention on innovation.
The Innovative Occupational Therapy Network (IOT) is focusing on how to educate occupational therapists in order to improve the effectiveness, quality and innovation of the services of the profession.


The purpose of the network is to:

  • Create innovative practices in areas of occupational therapy.
  • Strengthen both professional higher education and innovative competences.
  • Create strong links of international cooperation across sector interests/universities and colleges involved in the field of occupational therapy.
  • Establish a professional programme for a new field that is not yet covered by existing educational systems, in a structure that allows for international skills, flexibility and intercultural competencies.
  • Act on both a European and world wide level, including both public and private organisations in the field of occupational therapy.
  • Filling the competence gaps in a growing need for creative and innovative occupational therapists.
  • The IOT-project

Partners of the IOT-network have started the process of planning “The European Bachelor in Innovative Occupational Therapy (IOT)”. The project will be a joint project between the partners and will focus on developing the occupational therapy students competences in creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, with implementation in the field of occupational therapy both nationally and internationally. Students at the IOT shall acquire competences within creativity, processes of innovation, entrepreneurial planning and organization of projects, which will support innovation in both occupational therapeutic and health care services.
At IOT students are taught by innovative teaching methods.The teachers uses a didactic which simultaneously reinforces the student's professional skills and the ability to innovative use of professionalism. During the program, students will study and work with five types of innovation: Product innovation, process innovation, service innovation, user-driven innovation and research-driven innovation - all in the context of occupational therapy. Links to active professionals will ensure expert thinking about research and practice throughout the field of occupational therapy and occupational science.
